FROM 24th MAY A LARGE O NE-OF-ITS KIND EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO SCIENCE FICTION
Museo Nazionale del Cinema, Mole Antonelliana, Torino (Italy)
24 May – 27 November 2005
THINGS FROM ANOTHER WORLD. JOURNEY INTO SCIENCE-FICTION CINEMA is a large exhibition designed and produced by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema. The exhibition, which presents for the first time a vast collection of unique and very rare specimens, was inaugurated at the Mole Antonelliana on 24 May 2005 and will continue until 27 November 2005.
The exhibition, organized by Nicoletta Pacini, displays 300 posters and inserts from the Museo’s collections A chronological itinerary which goes from the early 1900s up to the present, highlights the main trends of a genre unique in charm and suggestion. The itinerary begins with "Voyage autour d’une étoile" (1906), a film born in the wake of the phantasmagorical productions by Georges Méliès, the father of science-fiction cinema. It then looks at the great “classics” like "King Kong", "Frankenstein", "The War of the Worlds", "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "Blob", and continues with "2001: A Space Odyssey", "E.T.", "Robocop", to conclude with recent hits such as "Independence Day", "Matrix" and "The Day After Tomorrow".
To complete the poster exhibit, whose opening coincides with the release of the "Revenge of Sith", the final episode in the Star Wars series, the largest ever private collection of collector’s toys (action figures) related to the Star Wars saga has been displayed in the Temple Hall. There are approximately 600 pieces selected from the extremely rich collection by Fabrizio Modina, one of the best known and most highly considered collectors worldwide.
The exhibition – produced with support from the Region of Piedmont and Fondiaria Sai and the collaboration of the City of Turin, Ascom, Epat and Martini – is the result of the recent data-gathering campaign campaign carried out in 2003, which made it possible to quantify the Museo’s entire collection in 341,440 pieces of advertising materials. The materials (posters, inserts and lobby cards cover a period of time from the early forms of cinematographic shows to the present Italian and foreign films, and are by some of the most illustrious names in movie poster art.
In parallel with the exhibition, during May, June and July, the Cinema Massimo offers the retrospective Things from Another World, organized by Stefano Boni. The film festival, which includes approximately 60 classics from science fiction cinema, was inaugurated on 24 May 2005 with the showing of the restored copy of Metropolis, Fritz Lang’s masterpiece from 1926, with live music accompaniment.
Finally, a large-sized catalogue with reproductions of the 120 most important posters from the exhibition is to be published. The catalogue, edited by Nicoletta Pacini, contains a presentation by Goffredo Fofi.
The area of the exhibition dedicated to Star Wars is in no way officially sponsored by Lucasfilm or 20th Century Fox.
